In the old days DM2 pharmacologic treatment often went from metformin to sulfonylurea to insulin. Currently, there are many more medication options and there are recommended pathways for selecting therapy. Diabetes medication choices are now linked to considerations of comorbidities and complication risks as well as glycemic control. Discussion will include how to individualize treatment based on specific issues, as shown in case studies.

Direct Relief: Updated Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine Mastitis Protocol – August 25, 2023

We will review the pathophysiologic spectrum of inflammatory conditions affecting the lactating breast in the mastitis spectrum. We start with discussing hyperlactation (“oversupply”) and will transition into exploring non-infectious and infectious mastitis, and abscess development in the setting of massage and untreated hyperlactation. We will also detail the identification and treatment of galactocele and lactational phlegmon. We will review risk factors for these conditions and how healthcare providers can help prevent progression of complications. These include techniques such as gentle lymphatic drainage and other supportive measures such as reducing excessive pumping.

This presentation will review the latest standard-of-care approaches to the screening, diagnosis and management of opioid use disorders that are expected of primacy care providers. Topics of focus will include the use of medication assisted treatments such as buprenorphine and naltrexone and how primary care providers can actually implement them. Practical strategies on how to identify and manage clients with opioid use disorders and how to distinguish these cases from chronic pain or active psychiatric conditions will be reviewed. This presentation will provide clinicians with a roadmap on how to more efficiently and effectively manage opioid use disorders while minimizing further stigmatization of the disorder.
